You Guys We’re Reading Something New! Finally! It’s The Host!

Well. We’re finally done with Bared To You, which we’ve been reading since November, and, guys, we’re kind of sick of erotica. We’re doing something at least partially something we’ve never done before! We’re reading Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight follow-up – because fuck reading Twilight – the science fiction/romance The Host! We’ll be spending a lot of time with The Host, everyone. We’re probably gonna be BFFs.

This is our vision.
This is our vision.

Google Books about The Host

The author of the Twilight series of # 1 bestsellers delivers her brilliant first novel for adults: a gripping story of love and betrayal in a future with the fate of humanity at stake.

Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away. The earth has been invaded by a species that take over the minds of their human hosts while leaving their bodies intact, and most of humanity has succumbed.

Wanderer, the invading “soul” who has been given Melanie’s body, knew about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the too vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn’t expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind.

Melanie fills Wanderer’s thoughts with visions of the man Melanie loves-Jared, a human who still lives in hiding. Unable to separate herself from her body’s desires, Wanderer yearns for a man she’s never met. As outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off to search for the man they both love.

Featuring what may be the first love triangle involving only two bodies, THE HOST is a riveting and unforgettable novel that will bring a vast new readership to one of the most compelling writers of our time.

Ariel’s pre-Host feelings about The Host

All I know so far is that it’s written by the same woman who wrote Twilight, inspired Fifty Shades, and that they just made a movie that looked really stupid based on this book. Someone’s eyes change colors so it means an alien has taken over their body or something. Riveting! Other than that, I don’t really want to know anything. I’m totally cool if this ends up not living up to our blog name and I love the shit out of it. Better yet, I hope Matt loves it and I hate it. How fun would that be!

Forget all that vampire shit, you guys, now it’s time for aliens. But probably still a crappy romance!

But oh my god, you guys, I just opened my kindle version of the book (I mean, it’s probably the same in all versions?), and somehow I go to this page that’s like “Here’s Stephenie Meyer’s playlist for the book!!!!” This makes me want to write a playlist for the blog. I’m also going to try really hard to remember where to point out the scenes that Meyer’s wanted each song to be in. Spoiler: apparently there’s one in chapter one!

Matthew’s pre-Host feelings about The Host

One of our biggest fears when we started Bad Books, Good Times was that people would demand that we read Twilight. Intriguingly, almost no one has ever suggested that we read Twilight, and it would seem that even the internet is tired of making fun of Twilight. It almost seems like a shame to skip over Stephenie Meyer, though, which is why we’re very glad that she wrote another terrible book that’s been made into another terrible movie.

In true Bad Books, Good Times tradition, we haven’t actually read this book first. Or know what it’s about. Aliens or something? I dunno. The Twilight person wrote it. It’s gotta be shitty, because Twilight was shitty. Although I don’t know what Twilight‘s about. Vampire babies or something? I dunno. Man, we do no research before we make these declarative statements about these novels being objectively terrible. We’re dicks.

Except seriously, read that last line of the Google Books description again: “the first love triangle involving only two bodies”. This is gonna be miserable. You’re gonna love it.

This concept is just so Animorphs, man. Except Animorphs did it better.

Of course, having not read the book, I don’t really “know” that. But, on the other hand, I know that.

You totally can. Some of the non-Applegates are awful if you want to try them. Of course, at their best, the books are amazing. “The Conspiracy” is an under the radar Animorphs that is still one of my all time favorites. Those books can be chilling.

Our next goosebumps like tribute to childhood!! I loved that series so much and then it got so repetitive after awhile.

        Also magic treehouse!

Oh, this’ll be good. Having read this book, I can safely say that you’re in for a treat. It’s not QUITE as bad as Twilight, but its still pretty damn terrible.

If you need a break afterwards and/or want to see possessing parasites done correctly, try reading The Puppet Masters by Robert Heinlein. It’s a bit dated these days, but it remains an excellent book.

I cannot tell you how much this blog always brightens my day! Even better, you are now doing the first book I stopped reading and gave away only a few chapters in… In fact, I think it was the first book I gave up on reading all together… Your blog will be a much better way to find out what happens! Thanks for always putting yourselves through such torture for our amusement and be sure to read something good every once and a while; not only will it save you from killing off all of your brain cells, but it will just make the bad books so much worse in comparison and give you more to write about.

Thank you so much for your comment! We’re happy to do what we can for the cause, and present a different way for people to find out what happens in these books without having to, you know, actually read them 🙂
