If you’re a regular reader of BBGT, you probably have noticed how many quotes from books like Fifty Shades of Grey or Bared to You could easily be mistaken for a horror novel if taken out of context. So why not play a game where we take quotes completely out of context and guess whether or not it belongs to the horror or romance genre!
ROUND 1
1) “Whoa. Monster cock.”
2) “We have to be friends. I won’t take no for an answer.”
3) “Why aren’t you eating me?”
4) “I recreated your room based on the photo I took of you sleeping.”
5) “I’m your boyfriend now, Nancy!”
Post your answers below, and I’ll reveal all next week!

I’m just spit balling here.
I really wish I’d just taken the Nancy bit out, but it felt so sneaky doing that!
Reading back all these quotes out of context, the Bared to You one really does seem like it completely belongs in horror. So shudder worthy.
I’m not going to lie, I feel like this is a trick question, because these all sound like quotes from romance novels. At least, the kind of romance novels we read on this blog. I might be willing to say that “Why aren’t you eating me?” is horror, but other than that, I seriously think these are all supposed to be romance. Which is pretty terrifying.
Dammit, Kate, we weren’t going to announce that we’re reading Beautiful Cannibals until next week! Way to ruin the surprise 🙁
Don’t you dare put that thought out into the universe, Matthew. There are still like, a dozen Maddox Brothers novels left to go, and if I end up having to read about Thomas/Taylor/Tyler/Trent/Tyrion/Tallulah/whothefuckever eating some coed, it’s going to be all your fault.
It would be just our luck that Jamie McGuire would read this blog and the only thing she’d get out of it is “hmmm. Cannibalism.”
These all sound terrifying. I want to say:
Horror
Romance
Horror
Terrible, terrible romance
Horror
Romance
Romance
Horror
Romance
Romance
If that first one had said, “Holy crap. Monster cock.” My answer would have been Ana 50 Shades of Grey, no questions about it.
Romance
Romance
Horror
The most terrifying romance ever
Horror
Horror
Romance
Horror
Romance
Horror
On comedian Doug Benson’s podcast, Doug Loves Movies, he used to do a game called Bane or Lincoln. He would give a quote from either The Dark Knight Rises or Lincoln and you would have to pick which film it was from. It wasn’t always easy. Just like the romance/horror quotes.
I could see them all in romance novels sadly.
1) Romance
2) Romance
3) Horror
4) Romance
5) Horror
It’s not horror, but this weekend I was replaying Arkham Asylum and it’s disconcerting that Killer Croc’s dialogue sounds like stuff all these dudes would say in the bedroom.
“I’ve got your scent.”
“I’ll rip you apart.”
“Your flesh will tear.”
I got that game in a sale but haven’t touched it yet, and now I’m going to subconsciously be looking for unintentional “romance” lines when I finally do.

1) “Whoa. Monster cock.”
Sadly, I’m guessing Romance. It sounds like something Ana would say. Has that telltale “Whoa” in there.
2) “We have to be friends. I won’t take no for an answer.”
Romance.
3) “Why aren’t you eating me?”
Horror. But I’ll be seriously disturbed if this is romance.
4) “I recreated your room based on the photo I took of you sleeping.”
I remember that. Romance.
5) “I’m your boyfriend now, Nancy!”
I don’t recognize the name Nancy so I’ll go with Horror on this one. But I freely admit I’m probably cheating.
1) “Whoa. Monster cock.”
– I’m a bit torn apart being a generic romance quote and one from The Giant Claw (anti-matter vulture from another dimension), but for good measure I’ll go with romance.
2) “We have to be friends. I won’t take no for an answer.”
– Romance, Beautiful Walking Disaster iirc.
3) “Why aren’t you eating me?”
– I’m gonna go with horror because I can’t recall someone wanting to get an eat out in one of these books.
4) “I recreated your room based on the photo I took of you sleeping.”
– Bared to You, so horror. Err, romance.
5) “I’m your boyfriend now, Nancy!”
– Nancy doesn’t ring any bells on the romance books, it does however, vaguelly bring up as a character in the Saw franchise? So Horror.
1) Horror – porn horror :)?
2) Romance
3) Romance (something with vampires maybe? Good vampires?)
4) Romance
5) Horror
Ooh, I love these kinds of things!
1) Horror
2) Romance
3) Horror, although that was a tough one.
4) Romance. It’s too horrifying to actually be horror.
5) Horror
1) “Whoa. Monster cock.”
I’m going with horror, just because I think it would be hilarious for there to be a horror movie with a monster shaped like a penis.
2) “We have to be friends. I won’t take no for an answer.”
This could be either. The word friends is throwing me off, because the romances we’ve been reading are more ‘we have to be married’.
So I’ll go with horror again.
3) “Why aren’t you eating me?”
Romance of the crossfire variety.
4) “I recreated your room based on the photo I took of you sleeping.”
Romance ah la 50 Shades.
5) “I’m your boyfriend now, Nancy!”
Probably horror, but could just as easily have been from any ‘modern’ romance.
