This Time I Think We're Supposed to Believe the Argument Has Real Consequences: Captivated by You Chapter 19

"The good wife, Alicia Florrick, well this has been fun"

Last week, a sex swing! This week, more arguing. THE STAKES HAVE NEVER BEEN HIGHER!

Captivated by You Chapter 19: Gideon

Gideon decides that breakfast is the best time to tell Eva that he offered Mark (Eva’s boss) a job in an obvious and shameless bid to get Eva to come work for him as well. Eva is furious both that Gideon did this at all and that it took him two days to tell her.

Gideon’s defence is that his arch nemesis Richard Landon had tried to hire Mark and Eva to work on the marketing for his new game console. Because Landon was only doing this to get to Gideon…somehow…instead of talking to Eva about the conflict of interest…he just offers Mark a job. Nice save, Gideon.

“What are you saying?”

“That Landon’s waited a long time for his pound of Cross flesh. Maybe he doesn’t care that you married into the name. I don’t know what he has in mind. At the very least, he’s forcing us into a place where we’re unable to share information with each other.”

WHO THE FUCK CARES? What information in this scenario would Gideon even be missing? As far as I’m aware, they’ve never discussed anything besides sex and their many enemies anyway.

At one point, Eva is so mad she says this:

“You need to stop talking,” she said hoarsely. “Because every word coming out of your mouth makes me think we’re so far apart on this that we’ve got no business being married.”

It’s so true, but I’m not really sure why this is the straw that broke the camels back when one time Gideon murdered someone. Like why is this where Eva finally takes a step back and is like, “This might be a fucked up situation.”

Eva storms out, saying she needs some time on her own because she was going to end up coming to work for Gideon anyway sometime in the future but she wanted to make that decision on her own. It really pissed me off that Eva said this – she had every right to be mad in this situation, but it had always been a good thing that she didn’t want to go work for Gideon and had stood her ground on that. Why now is she like, “Actually, all along I was telling you definitely not, but I really meant yes.” It sets the worst possible precedent for this already terrible relationship.

She’s also angry that she’ll be out of a job, saying that she’s leaving so she can figure out what she’s going to do next. I’m confused as to why Eva would be out of a job, though, if Mark went to work for Gideon? It’s not his business, and at this point Eva is both valuable both because of her name and because she’s meant to be good at her job. Why would they just be like, “Well if Mark left, we have no use for you!”

The scene ends, and we’re thrown into another one of Gideon’s absolutely dreadful dreams – dreadful both in terms of the actual content of the dream and it’s execution. We learn nothing new from the dream at all, it’s just used as a way to make Eva look horrible for leaving Gideon to fend for himself against the darkness within, or whatever.

Initially, what starts out as a usual gross sex scene in which sacs are massaged and fingers somehow thicken and lengthen during anal fingering (wizardry at its most baffling), becomes another dream in which Gideon is raped by Hugh again, and then he murders him/his sister Anne who he has suddenly morphed into. Also Eva has left him in the dream and he’s like, “RAAAAAAGEEEE.” Guys, I’m worried about Gideon and everyone around him.

The next day at work, Marks shows up to discuss Gideon’s offer. This prompts Gideon to justify to himself what he did yet again – if he didn’t protect Eva, she would face things head on, and we just can’t have that, can we?

Of course, Mark accepts the offer and says that he’s going to try to get Eva to join him, completely unaware of the dramatic drama going on because of this.

The rest of the chapter passes in a sad!Gideon blur. He tries to woo Eva back to him with various texts:

I texted her constantly. Pleas for her to call me. I just need to hear your voice. Notes about nothing. Cooler today, isn’t it? Comments about work. Never realized Scott always wears blue. And most of all, I love you. ”

I didn’t think there were any new ways to make talking about the weather seem more boring, but I guess if there was a man up to the job it would be Gideon Cross. And if making sharp observations about Scott’s work clothing wasn’t enough to get Eva to respond, she has a heart of stone.

The chapter closes with Gideon opening up to his and Eva’s therapist about their fight, the ways he might have to change in order to make the relationship work, and about his past.

"The good wife, Alicia Florrick, well this has been fun"

Since next chapter is the last for this book, does anyone have any guesses about what the next book is going to be about? Is it going to be about Gideon and Eva getting back together (or will that just happen next chapter)? Reacting to Corinne’s diary entires, er, “book” being published? Finally finding out what Anne Lucas’ revenge is actually supposed to be? The wedding?Cary and his maybe baby? ALL OF THE THINGS?

I’m sticking to my gut on this question, and am still convinced that the series should logically end with my “Cary’s hell-spawn destroys Eva, Gideon, and the Earth” theory.

No, but seriously. The next chapter is the last? There has been NO PLOT FOR THIS ENTIRE BOOK. Only plot threads that pop up randomly and are never fully explored.

Megumi is horribly abused! Then Eva talks to her for one scene and sends her stepdad’s goon after the guy. Next. Brett wants Eva back! He whines and does a Nickelback impression and refuses to delete a sex tape that’s never brought up again. Next. Christopher’s a dick! Next. Gideon’s stepdad didn’t know about his abuse! Next. Corrine writes a book! Arnaldo has a show! Five kabillion other minor characters! NEXT. NEXT. NEXT. WHAT THE HELL IS LEFT FOR A FIFTH BOOK JUST LET THIS SERIES DIE.

Book 4&5 are a money grab. Nothing more. They should have ended it with the beach wedding in book 3 and called it. But suddenly Day was all “I am not done with their story…” which was code for “I’m not done with the paycheck…” Plus someone optioned it a couple years ago to become a TV series, but other than some “Dream Casting” on her FB page, nothing has happened.

      My Book 5 Prediction:
      – Fight
      – Sex cures all
      – Eva starts at Crossfire. Insert minor female character that lusts after Gideon and Eva is jealous even though he doesn’t know her name.
      – Fight
      – Guilt Sex
      – Cary moves into the Penthouse. More awkwardness in the kitchen. A lot of Baby Girl and can’t I just screw Tat and Trey? Still no mention of paternity test.
      – Kinky Sex
      – Fight
      – Therapy with little purpose
      – Mom wedding drama, more minor characters come in for the wedding. This time Gideon is jealous of Eva’s 3rd cousin, twice removed because he touches her arm.
      – Fight 3 days before wedding. Reason? Does there even need to be one any more?
      – Someone moves out. More Baby Girl from Cary.
      – Eva’s parents reunite to save the wedding (and we still get gross descriptions about how hot they are and what great sex they have)
      – I love you forever, let’s never fight.
      – Wedding
      – A baby?!
      – Allusions to a book 6…

I greatly enjoy you theory, I think it would bring something original to this otherwise very dull table.

I guess all the plots are starting and then are going to come together into one massive blob of a story. Like Corinne’s book comes out the same day that Brett somehow manages to broadcast the sex tape on every channel across America, no, the world, and Eva and Gideon have to save the world from destruction also.

It seems cruel and unfair that we don’t get to hear more about Arnoldo’s television show in this book. YOU MEAN WE HAVE TO WAIT FOR MORE DEETS??? Uncool.

I’m hoping that they’ll still be apart (or at least, in very shaky territory) when the book ends. One of the only good things about the entire Fifty Shades trilogy was that the first book ended with them split up, so it meant you could just pretend the series ended there, Ana got some therapy, Christian got some BETTER therapy, everyone moved on, and the next two books never happened. I’d love for Captivated By You to let me pretend, for one brief and shining moment, that Sylvia Day recognizes how terrible Eva and Gideon are for each other and that they should never end up together.
But alas, I know that everything will be solved during the next chapter, presumably with a special guest appearance from Eva’s Greedy Cunt.

I felt like that especially with the Fifty Shades movie, like if that was the for real ending I’d be like YAY.

Eva’s greed cunt is the greatest character of all.

Hi ariel and Mathew. I have been reading your blog for awhile now, I was looking for sites that snarked on 50 shades like I did and I found you guys. I love you guys commentary on all these books. So I was on daily beast and saw this announced and wanted you two to know that E.L. James apparently heard your (nonexistent) pleas!! Because she is releasing 50 shades now from the pov of mr. grey himself. and its called…. wait for it…. Grey. That is just so original. LOLLL Because why not have the pov from the douchebag that started this all and helped spawn the likes of Gideon? Can you imagine what is going on in Christian’s head? will he out crazy Gideon? so many questions LOLLL will you guys read it?. You guys seem like such nice people though, I don’t know if you deserve that, Once from anna’s pov might be enough.

A direct quote from her blog as to why she is releasing this “This book is dedicated to those readers who asked…. and asked… and asked.. asked for this” I read that and my first question was… really? who are these people? I think their names should be on some type of list.LOLLL Like someone said about the last two books for Gideon and eva those were clearly for money, you know this is to. Because i really don’t think we need to be inside Christians head, I don’t think it will change the story or my opinion of him or anna. Maybe it will be worth the read if we find out Christian has a little person running around in his head as well? I wonder what he gets up to? LOLL

Any bets on who will be more serial killer-y? Gideon or Christian?

    • 22aer22 Reply

Hahahaha you’re so right, someone needs to provide a list of names so they can be blacklisted from everything forever. “You want to eat at this restaurant? I’m sorry, ma’am, but you’re on a very serious list, I can’t let you in.”

I still can’t get over the fact it’s coming out in a couple weeks, although I’m sure it only took James an hour to write so I’m not sure why I’m surprised. Thank god they can’t make a movie out of this book since it’s just Fifty Shades of Grey from a different perspective…although there would be scenes of what Christian does when Ana’s not around…Oh god they’re not going to do that, right???

    • KayMia Reply

Ana had a subconscious and inner goddess that were sentient characters, so Christian Grey will tell his story with help from…his penis and his inner penis? I don’t remember that there was anything else to his character. Maybe his light grey side and his dark grey side?

My predication? Gideon snaps and tries to kill Eva. Fires a gun but Cary gets shots instead.

Cause he was caught in the… wait for it… CROSSFIRE.

That sounded funnier in my head. Anyway, serious prediction now… Sex?

Hahahaha I love it so so much.

Honestly, though, if somehow that did happen, everyone would obviously find a way to justify the murder like they always do sigh.
