One With You Chapter 13:
Eva tries to get Gideon to open up to her about how he’s feeling after confronting his mother. Not great, as you would imagine. Eva addresses this in a mature and impressive way:
“It hurts. Okay? But I knew it would. That’s why I put it off so long. But it’s better this way. I feel … Fuck. It’s settled.”
My lips pursed. Because I wanted him to look at me when he was saying stuff like that, I untied my robe and let the silk whisper off my shoulders.”
Cosmo, make note: if you want your man to open up to you emotionally about a fight with his mother, just take off your clothes! It’s a sure-fire way to get him to look at you while he bares his soul.
“I arched my back as I reached for the hook, giving Gideon a prime view of the ass he loved.”
Wait. She doesn’t even care if he’s looking her in the eyes when he tells her this, just looking anywhere at her? It seems rude on Eva’s part to ask Gideon to open up to her and then just give him a view of her ass. Or is this really generous of her? I can’t tell with these people.
Eva turns back around and Gideon is staring at her, just like she planned! She tells him his parents were flawed people and he can’t blame himself. She also says he didn’t inherit any of their flaws, which is a really low bar since I think the flaws she’s referring to are wilfully ignoring the suffering and abuse of your child and embezzling loads of money from your clients.
This serious scene then turns into a strange exchange between Gideon and Eva about Eva’s sexy dress.
“His gaze narrowed. Reaching around with both hands, he slid his fingers into my cleavage and tried pushing my breasts apart to hide the curves beneath the thick straps.
I hummed and leaned against him.
Taking my shoulders, he straightened me up so he could study the fit. “It didn’t look like that in the photo.”
Deliberately misunderstanding him, I told him, “I haven’t put my heels on yet. It won’t drag on the ground when I do.”
“I’m not worried about the bottom,” he said tightly. “We need to put something in that middle part.”
“Why would we do that?”
“You know damned well why.” He prowled over to the dresser and yanked a drawer open. A moment later, he came back and thrust a white handkerchief toward me. “Put that in there.”
I laughed. “Oh my God. You’re kidding.”
But he wasn’t. Reaching around from behind me, he shoved the unfolded cloth into my bodice, tucking it into either side.
“No,” I told him crossly. “That looks ridiculous.”
Oh my god, Gideon. Seriously? You’re so silly!
But, oh? It’s a joke??
“When his hands fell away, I gave him a second to see how stupid it looked.
“Forget it. I’ll wear something else.”
“Yeah,” he agreed, nodding and shoving his hands in his pockets.
I tugged the handkerchief out.“Something like this,” he murmured.
Sparks of fire shot out of his hands as he reached over my head and wrapped a dazzling diamond choker around my neck. At least two inches wide, it hugged the base of my throat and glittered as if lit from within.
“Gideon.” I touched it with trembling fingers as he fastened it securely. “It’s … gorgeous.”
[…]Smiling back, I said, “I thought you were serious about my boobs.”
“Angel, I take your tits very seriously. So tonight, when someone ogles them, they’ll realize you’re much too expensive and they couldn’t possibly afford you.”
OH HE GOT HER GOOD!!!
I honestly have no idea what big event they’re going to – I’m sure it was mentioned at some point, but will I be flipping back to double-check? No. Absolutely not. I think it’s one of Gideon’s charity events? Anyway, Cary shows up and they all head off together.

Cary’s got his first international modelling gig lined up, and Eva is happy for him but realizes a chapter in her life is closing and she and Cary might drift apart a bit. Her conversation with Cary makes me think this is not a terrible thing to happen:
“How’s Tatiana?”
His smile grew tight, his eyes hard. “She says she’s dating someone. She moves quick when she sees something she likes, always has.”
“Are you okay with that?”
“No.” He started peeling the label off his beer bottle. “Some dude’s blowing his load where my baby is. I think that’s sick.” He glanced at Gideon. “Can you imagine?”
Yeah, this is a friendship you want to hold on to as tightly as possible. Never let him go, Eva.
At the event, Gideon and Eva greet their family members like Eva’s mother, Gideon’s sister Ireland, Gideon’s step-father. Eva reiterates how attractive each person is, lest we’d forgotten. Seriously, it’s just pages of greetings and, “So and so is beautiful!”
Even Magdalene shows up! Where the fuck has she been? Once she turned out to be kind of nice, she was completely removed from the story.
Now that she was happy with her artist, she was serene and lovely and was slowly becoming a close acquaintance.
“Slowly becoming a close acquaintance” that is a really weird way to describe the situation. Maybe one day they will be super best acquaintances, but that could take at least a decade.
There is a lot of random shit that happens at the party, like Eva’s mother warning her that Cary shouldn’t live with them since it will cause rumours to fly about Gideon. Given there are photos that he once had a threesome, people will be convinced that he is now having threesomes with Eva and Cary!

Also, Ireland’s boyfriend is a cheating liar who is also at the event, so Magdalene and Eva hatch a plan to have her dance with Cary in front of him! That is what close acquaintances can accomplish when they work together.
Things are going well, until the end of the chapter:
“Get down!
The shout barely registered before Gideon tackled me. A loud crack of sound jolted through me, reverberating off the brick and ringing in my ears. Deafeningly close … Jesus. Right beside us.
We hit the carpeted pavement hard. Gideon rolled, covering me with his body. More weight as someone threw themselves over Gideon. Another bark of noise. Then another. Another …
Crushed. Too heavy. Breathe. My lungs couldn’t expand. My head pounded.
Oxygen. God.
I struggled. Clawing at the red carpet. Gideon clutched me tighter. His voice was harsh in my ear, the words lost beneath the frantic buzzing in my head.
Air. Can’t breathe … The world went black.”
Once second you’re scheming with beloved close acquaintances in a bathroom and the next you’re being shot at. Life will never be simple for Eva and Gideon, will it?
